Historical Kalmar
In Kalmar, you can take a closer look at many historical monuments and carefully renovated buildings. During the Middle Ages, Kalmar was one of the country's most important cities. It was a thriving trading post and a place for major political meetings. The most famous is the Union meeting in 1397, when the Kalmar Union was formed.
In 1640, it was decided that Kalmar's city center would be moved, from its former location at Kalmar Castle and Slottsfjärden to its current location at Kvarnholmen. The people of

Kalmar were reluctant at first, but after a fire in 1647 the decision became reality. The new city center was built inside moats and fortifications. In the center was the cathedral, which today is one of Northern Europe's best-preserved Baroque churches.
Large parts of the old city wall still remain on Kvarnholmen, as well as well-preserved buildings from the 17th century onwards. You can experience the truly old Kalmar in Gamla stan. The old town center is below ground level, but you can see winding alleys, aged small houses and remnants of the original medieval wall.
